Mods and more mods….

Customising is our thing. We like to make things the way we want them.

We will usually see how other people solve the problem first, then we go and do it our way. Sometimes better, sometimes not.

Usually better 🙂

Lighting

The light fittings that came in the caravan were LED and adequate for roughing it. But they are a cool white and not particularly pleasing or illuminating.

Warm white attract less insects and using cheap LED strips off Ebay and a bit of clever rewiring the result is sooooooo much better.
I also put in some yellow lights so there could be low light option that would not attract bugs at all.

Of course LED strips were not just installed inside but outside on the awning as well, so no more setting up lanterns, cooking in the dark and fighting with bugs while having dinner.

The switches were installed near the door, so you can turn them on or off conveniently. The original light is switched on at the light on the ceiling. Impossible for kids and a pain in the butt to find in the dark.

I also had to modify the power disconnect plug and used a 7 pin trailer plug and socket so I could get all the wiring for both inside and outside lights through the one fitting.

Bed extenders

(This is Karina’s project)

When you have two kids that both want to have their own space and climbing over each other to get in and out of bed causes fighting and lack of sleep (especially in the middle of the night when the the kid in the back needs to go to the toilet), then you need to mod up the stock Jayco beds.

No, this is not our idea, but it is our version of some one else’s solution.

Instead of sleeping one in front of the other (both heads pointing to the side of the caravan walls), we spin them 90 degrees so both heads are pointing to the front (or back) of the caravan.

Easy!

No.

The bed is a double and the kids, even though they are small, are too long to sleep sideways on a double mattress.
So the solution is mattress extenders.

These are simply blocks of foam that fit at the bottom of the bed and rest on the counter top on one side and a custom built removable platform on the other. They velcro onto the bed floor underneath the mattress so they can be easily removed during the day and while in transit.

Clever Karina sewed them up so the covers can be removed easily for cleaning.

And to finish it off she cleverly put up a slide-able divider between the beds so the kids can have their own space and not any each other (us).
